On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the United States Gulf Coast, taking many lives and causing billions of dollars in damages. The city of New Orleans might have been largely spared were it not for the levee failures that followed. Unfortunately, New Orleans was dealt a near-fatal blow and the U.S. was faced with the greatest national disaster of its history – the costliest and most destructive hurricane ever, as well as the largest pet disaster in history.

Eighty percent of New Orleans flooded as a result of this engineering disaster and the majority of the city was uninhabitable for months. The infrastructure of this national treasure was so devastated that, over one year later, there are still neighborhoods without city services. Housing, schools, hospitals, places of worship, etc. are all still in short supply. The immense scope of this disaster affects every aspect of daily life. Though they have done an admirable job getting the rebuilding process started, our fellow Americans continue to struggle.

New Orleanians have come to the aid of the rest of the country during past crises. Now, it is our turn to repay them, to show our solidarity, and to help them make themselves whole again. Let's give them a helping hand and be a part of the rebirth of New Orleans. Then, we will truly be able to say "Laissez les bon temps rouler!"
